buy a friend a book week

buyafriendabook.com

Starts tomorrow!!

I've ordered a couple of books for my besties, can't wait for them to be delivered.

idol chatter...

I think Kris was far above all the rest of them tonight. Megan really needs to go home. I'm still not sure about Adam. He sure picks the right song but he creeps me out. Scott wasn't horrible but he's out of his league. I'm glad it wasn't a 2-hour show.

too chipper?

ten things tuesday...

Random things on my mind:

1) I'm excited for my book group to discuss the Gurnsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society--it should make for some very lively and thoughtful discussion. I'm enjoying the book.

2) Gloomy weather is a downer. Woke up to snow & slush yesterday and today it's just dreary. Winter begone!

3) Creatively, I've felt a bit blocked lately. I had a great idea for a student project but couldn't find the resources I needed and it frustrated me. I KNOW it's out there, I just don't know how to find it.

4) I really hate having to cook all my own meals. And eating cereal isn't an option for every meal. I wish someone else would take care of routine things for a while.

5) Tomorrow is April Fools Day. I hope no one pranks me. I have no pranks planned.

6) Vacation is still three weeks away. T-h-r-e-e.

7) In those three weeks is a week of NWEA testing. I don't even remember what NWEA stands for but luckily, I don't have to administer the tests.

8) My lesson plans are complete until vacation. And my photocopying and organizing is also done.

9) Maybe I'm spending too much time by myself.

10) There are moments of the day that are pure joy. I felt it Sunday, yesterday and today--despite the gloomy weather.

smells like teen spirit...

School spirit project ends with obscenity complaints

by Sabra Gertsch & KOMO Staff
Originally printed at http://www.komonews.com/news/local/41979512.html

MILL CREEK, Wash. -- It's a shirt made by the school, but students can't wear it on campus.

Jackson High School student leaders handed out some 2,000 T-shirts to its students, then asked for them to be returned after parents claimed the shirts display an obscene message.

The shirts feature four terms - "mole rat," "stain," "crabby patties" and "burnt toast," each defining a class at Jackson High. The Everett School District said the senior student leadership came up with the names as a part of a spirit project, and randomly chose the names they thought were fun and different.

But some parents found nothing fun or different about the words "stain" and "crabby patties."

According to UrbanDictionary.com, "stain" has several slang meanings, including "sex partner," "to have sex with someone" and "a person in your life you can't get rid of."

The same dictionary describes "Crabby Patty" as "a female with crabs."

"Calling us a slut through another definition," said sophomore Melissa Kane.

Parent Susan Kane said she was very upset by the shirt. "Sending home my daughter with a shirt that does not describe her at all."

Some students refused to take the shirts home. Those who did so are now being asked to bring them back due to the negative response.

"They're talking about them all the time, the teachers. We had a big discussion about it in class the other da," said Melissa Kane.

But some believe it's all much ado about nothing.

"I think it turned into a big mess," said junior Julia Larsen. "I've talked to people don't think its that big of a deal. People think its funny. The intention was supposed to be funny."

District officials said students responsible for the shirts feel sick about what they claim is an unintended response.

"The damage is done. The kids feel bad. The money was wasted.Spirit week is ridiculous. They're all upset," said Susan Kane. "That's why I'm mad."

The T-shirts were paid for with student fees -- their parents' money. The district would not confirm how much was spent, or how much more it will cost to correct the shirts which will now display the year each class graduates.

You are energetic to the point of being hyperactive. You are the ultimate multitasker.

stuff n stuff...

So I'm feeling crabby tonight. I don't know what's off, I feel like I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop. But there wasn't a first shoe that dropped. I'm anticipating something that I can't put my finger on.

I went to the doctor this morning. My blood pressure is beautiful. I got refills on my prescriptions. My psychiatrist had just mailed an update to my doctor and we compared the notes, things are going really well. Medically I'm great. Just overweight. *sigh* It was weird to be w-a-y out of my morning routine.

I'm a bit miffed about my evaluation from Friday. No "exceeds." Not even any "meets +" I hate the evaluation process, and I am frustrated that I'm putting any energy into being miffed about this. And yet, here I am. grrr

Creatively I'm at a road block, too. I'm trying to pull together an idea to have my students put together a time line of sectionalism leading up to the Civil War using political cartoons. Great idea but I can't find a website with political cartoons for the right era.

We got laughing today, so hard I snorted, and I couldn't even tell you what it was all about. Must've been something silly someone said.

tgif...

It was a frazzle-dazzle day. Not only the first day of spring, complete with sunshine and temps in the low 40s (yes, that's warm for here); it was the last day of Winter Carnival week. Ironic. And tonight is Battle of the Bands, high excitement and drama going on at school. So, with all that craziness, I was observed today. And, for the first time ever, I ran out of handouts. Wha???? Yeah... I ran out of handouts and had to leave the room for a minute to photocopy more. I was so frustrated. Showing a power point, giving them notes, trying to make it relevant and all that ...today. It took me a while to shrug off my pissyness.

I just want the weekend.

it's almost friday...

I've been working so hard this week. Manifest Destiny is not easy to teach. And for as much as I'm enjoying my school year, these kiddos sure aren't academic. They have little curiosity and interest. I would have thought they had studied this concept somewhere in their career. But they are learning for the first time. And I guess that's one of the reasons it's been so tough this week, it's all new concepts instead of reinforcing or going into depth with a familiar concept.

Today I introduced the pieces of their assessment--an alternative to a traditional test. It's hard to gauge if they understood the directions or not. I mean, looking at their faces, they seem to get it. But then they seem to have a hard time getting to work. It's hard to say, though, and I suppose we'll find out when everything's due on Tuesday.

Maybe it is because I know when I'm done this unit it's build up to the Civil War. It fascinates me to teach the Civil War. Every year I seem to get deeper and deeper in my own understanding of the conflict. This is a topic they usually are interested in studying. And I have a few activities that hit every ability level and learning style, so everyone gets to shine.

Weaving Together Lives

Scorpio Daily Horoscope

You may find you are easily amused by the simple irregularities of life today. Your first impulse will likely be to share your witty observations about the ridiculousness of the world with the individuals you care most about. If you do choose to approach your family and friends with jokes and harmless pranks, you may be surprised to discover that they appreciate your humor and reward your forthrightness with humorous anecdotes of their own. This can be a wonderful time to organize a party or to gather the people you love in your home for an evening of mirthful activities. As you participate in entertaining activities with loved ones today, your relationships will likely grow stronger.

Our lives and those of the people we care about become indelibly intertwined when we communicate, work, and play together on a regular basis. Since we have concrete evidence of our compatibility in the ease and comfortableness of our everyday communal experiences, we need never doubt that some rift will come between us. Our shared memories provide us with a framework from which we can relate to one another more closely. Likewise, we know enough about each other to be not only sympathetic when our lives go awry but also helpful in a very constructive way. The closeness we enjoy is based on true affinity rather than on simple physical proximity or established relationship. As we build a shared history, our lives grow even more enmeshed. The time you spend in the company of your loved ones today will bring you closer together.

idol chatter

So, it was Grand Ol' Opry Night on Idol with Randy Travis as mentor. I don't even know where to start. The mini-interview packages before the singers made Randy sound like a real ding-bat. The song choices were very odd. I think my favorites were Kris Allen and Matt Girard, but it was such an up and down show that I am a bit confused.

Adam's performance was a real head-scratcher--tackling the Johnny Cash classic "Ring of Fire" with a middle-Eastern, sitar-y touch was ballsy.

Allison Iraheta was pretty good.

Danny was pretty good once he got started but the beginning was rough.

All in all not my favorite Country week. No one really threw down and went for it. Mostly forgettable. meh.

I think the boys were far better than the girls tonight. Very up and down show for me. Danny Gokey was my favorite. I'm surprised they had Michael Jackson night so early in the competition.

And now a surprise twist for tomorrow night?? hmmmm...

regret yet?

All this school year I've wanted to be a bit more involved in the teacher's union. But I didn't really know where I would fit in. I finally decided that I would join the contract negotiations team because of the State's mandates for school district consolidation. I think I can be a cool head. Hope I don't regret this.

Ten things I like to do to unwind:

1) Decompressing with my teacher friends during the day.

2) Tidying up my desk before I go home for the day.

3) Driving. With or without a destination.

4) Music. Usually some sing-along stuff. Or the funk. I adore funk.

5) Journaling. Either online or pen-and-paper.

6) Playing on the computer. Googling, reading the news, reading my favorite blogs, tweeting.

7) Warm (not hot) showers.

8) Puppy kisses. Puppy love is the best.

9) Watching t.v. But not the news, that makes me cynical.

10) Reading. Books, magazines... anything.

what body of water are you?

Swiped from The Gal Herself

You Are an Ocean

You are impressive and fascinating. People are drawn to your glory.

You are a profound and passionate person. You are boundless in your power.

You have a philosophical and poetic soul. You take a lot of time to reflect.

You are mysterious and captivating. You are too deep for anyone to figure out.

just another manic monday

What would you do with an extra hour each day? I'd like to think I'd write or read or do something intellectually stimulating but I'd probably sleep

Do you wear a watch? If so, tell us about it. If not, how do you keep track of time? I have a fairly keen sense of time and I have a lot of clocks in my house

If it was possible, would you want to know how many days you had left to live? nah, I don't think I would want to know

yawn...

This time change really does a number on me. I'm like a zombie. And the weather was weird today--snowing in the morning and sunny in the afternoon. It did turn out to be a gorgeous afternoon. But I'm completely exhausted. I'm going to bed at the end of this Law & Order.

i say... and you think...?

1. Mourning :: doves
2. Approval :: acceptance
3. Lotion :: body cream
4. Perspire :: glisten
5. Language :: talk
6. Defection :: traitor
7. Play :: light-hearted
8. Graphic :: illustrated
9. Spicy :: tangy
10. In love :: loving

just finished reading...

It's a book about where lost things go. And it's a story about finding your way home. And letting go.

A quickie read. I like the author.

women's day

International Women’s Day is celebrated around the world each year on 8 March. It is an important occasion to celebrate the achievements and gains made by women and to focus on the job still to do in working towards equality for women around the world.

International Women’s Day provides an opportunity for communities to recognize and celebrate local women’s achievements and the contribution they continue to make to their area.

postsecret

PostSecret is an ongoing community art project where people mail in their secrets anonymously on one side of a homemade postcard. Every week I like to post one that speaks to me--this week more than one jumped out at me.
