saga...

(alternate title: why I need a boyfriend)

So, lying in bed reading last night, I glance up at the ceiling and notice a HUGE spider lurking up there. No biggie, right? Then it starts spinning a web and drops down and hustles back up the strand. The heebie-jeebies hit. I start a mini-freak out.

I get up and get a broom and take a whack at it... lurking and staring at me. But instead of killing it, I knocked it down and then I couldn't find it, until I look on a shopping bag that is storing some socks and against the white, I see the unfurled legs. OhNo! Spidey is not disabled. I took another swat at it and see Spidey scuttle along the floor. I figure everything's ok and resume reading.

But after about ten minutes--Spidey is again lurking and glaring at me from the ceiling. This time I call a truce. I tried to take a photo but my batteries ran out and every time I tried to zoom in, it just looked like a dime on the ceiling. So I turned the light off and decided to sleep with one eye open. My one eye against Spidey's bajillion eyes.

I had freaky dreams.

But when I awoke and looked around, Spidey was in the same place as last night. Spiders sleep? Anyhoodle, I kept staring at Spidey and Spidey kept staring back. Finally, I got out of bed and did my thing. Later in the afternoon, I checked again and Spidey was still in position. I decided to try the broom again. This time, I smooshed the boom into Spidey and ground it a bit. Spidey tumbled to the window still but I kept smacking and grinding with the broom until I saw a trail of legs and a smoosh mark.

Honestly, I'm feeling upset about the whole thing. It's weird to have any feelings about a spider. But I killed a spider. I know, I know... it's a spider. Part of it is because I had to take care of it myself. This is when a boyfriend/husband would come in handy. They usually don't mind killing stuff.

gah. What if this is as good as it gets?

The Legendary Soundman Behind Hollywood's Most Famous Noises

If you've seen Star Wars, Indiana Jones, or Wall-E, then you know the work of Hollywood's most legendary sound designer, Ben Burtt.

After taking his first (uncredited) job on the original Death Race 2000 in 1975, Burtt would go on to turn movie sound into an art. By capturing and manipulating ambient and mechanical noises, he created entirely new aural worlds. Here are a few of his trademark sounds.

R2D2's Voice: Most movie fans think that the robot's voice is an elaborate creation of computer synthesizers, but it's actually a combination of Burtt whistling and making fart noises into an old tape recorder.

The Clicks of Wall-E's Cockroach Pet: After experimenting with various synthesized animal noises, Burtt settled on accelerating the chatter of an irritated raccoon.

The Star Wars Lightsaber: The hum and the clash of the lightsaber came from two malfunctioning devices - a broken television set tuned between two VHF channels and an idling film projector.

Chewbacca's Voice
: Although the fictional wookie looks all ape, his voice is based on the barks and grunts of dogs, mixed with the growls of lions and bears.

Star Wars' T.I.E. Fighter
: The roar of the evil Empire's fighters (the name stands for Twin Ion Engine) is actually the roar of an elephant. To add some length to the sound, Burtt layered in the buzz of his car driving on a wet road.

Indiana Jones' Whip: The crack of Dr. Jones' whip is just that - the sound of Indiana Jones cracking his whip. During the making of Raiders of the Lost Ark, Burtt recorded Harrison Ford snapping the whip along a rural road in Marin County, California. To add a little more whoosh, Burtt dropped in the sound of a Harrier Jump Jet that flew by.

hangin' with my homey...

Had a nice lunch with my bestie. The only shocker was the meal--Ruby Tuesd*y's Carolina Chicken Salad has 26 points. Then we went book shopping and hung out at the mall. Next was a "quick" errand at WalM*rt which turned into forty-five minutes of investigating the kitchen section and beauty products. Non-stop talking and catching up on weeks of life and stuff. And complaining about the weather--we're both so glad that Junetober is done. Maybe we'll be lucky with July.

I knew I would have an understanding ear when I talked about my wedding reaction from Saturday. She totally understood how angsty I felt about everything.

Inaugural Whoopie Pie Festival a sweet success
By Diana Bowley
BDN Staff

DOVER-FOXCROFT, Maine — Creamy white frosting covered some of their chins Saturday and their fingers were coated with chocolate, but the mess didn’t bother participants of the inaugural Whoopie Pie Festival.

The weekend event sponsored by Center Theater was declared a sweet and creamy success. A baker’s dozen of cooks shared their favorite pies — featuring just about every possible combination of creamy filling smooshed between two round cakes — with about 500 people.

“I’m thrilled!” Patrick Myers, the festival’s organizer, said Saturday. The weather cooperated, cooks from throughout the state entered their whoopie pies for the judging and hundreds of people turned out, he said. He figured the state needed to celebrate the Maine whoopie pie, a sweet-cake that can be found on counters in nearly every bakery, as well as grocery and convenience stores.

It has been such a Maine staple that Amos Orcutt, president and chief executive officer of the University of Maine Foundation, one of Saturday’s judges, is working to make the delectable sweet-cake the state’s official dessert.

On Saturday, there were cakes and fillings that incorporated molasses, pumpkin, blueberries, coffee brandy, chocolate chips, Chambord (raspberry liqueur), espresso coffee, rum, and cointreau and fresh orange zest.

The bakers who submitted the sweet tooth’s delights included Carol Ford and Karen Haase of Cranberry Island Kitchen of Cumberland, who have been featured on the Martha Stewart Show; Donna Carrigan of Walpole and Lana Webb of Buck’s Harbor with their Wezeola’s Wackie Whoopies; Betty Reez of WoopieZ, Freeport’s Gourmet Whoopie; Stutzman Farms of Sangerville; Heather Fowler of Heather’s Whoopie Pies of Lamoine; and Governor’s Restaurant.

The first-place winners were: Most Original Whoopie Pie, Betty Reez for her Needham Whoopie Pie; Best Flavored, Sandee Washburn of Dover-Foxcroft; and Best Traditional Whoopie Pie, the Piscataquis Times.

The winner of the People’s Choice award was Governor’s Restaurant of Old Town.

Carrigan, whose day job is designing kitchens, said she loves making whoopie pies. She said she prepared 128 whoopie pies for the event and those pies were parceled out in small pieces for visitors to taste.

“I just thought this would be a fun thing to do,” she said.

Reez said it was fun to watch people take their first bite and to see their facial reaction.

That reaction for Polly Carey was a wide smile.

“The people are so very friendly, and of course, the whoopie pies are excellent,” the Bangor woman said.

Carey and her daughter, Diane Carey Stanchfield, said they saw a BDN article about the event and decided to attend the festival. They both sought out Myers and told them how pleased they were to be part of the festival.

The festival also offered games for children sponsored by the Piscataquis Regional YMCA and a barbecue sponsored by the Shiretown Homecoming Committee.

Dover-Foxcroft Town Manager Jack Clukey, who helped to man the latter booth, said Saturday there was quite a run on milk and drinks to help wash down the pies.

Myers said he is already thinking ahead to next year’s festival that will be held June 26, 2010.

“We’ll be making some changes and adding a lot to it for next year,” he said. “Personally, I want to see the World’s Largest Whoopie Pie made right here in Piscataquis County.”

The proceeds from the festival will help the Center Theatre’s endowment campaign. The theater has a goal of raising $25,000 this year to qualify for a $25,000 match from the Maine Community Foundation.

It was refreshing to go to my friend Angela's wedding today. She is so down to earth and low key, the whole wedding was exactly like that. A flower girl but no attendants other than her. Angela looked spectacular in her gown and her bouquet was a lovely arrangement of wildflowers (no, that's not it in the picture) and garden and wildflowers decorated the whole church and reception. Walking in you could feel the love. That was the vibe of the whole day. Love was in the air. The music was beautiful, too, the bride's cousin played and sang a lovely song that I hadn't heard before, I'll have to remember to get the name from Ang. And their first kiss was cute--Nick dipped her and planted a huge one on her. Very much their personalities.

Typical of Ang, she and Nick talked to each other through the whole ceremony--I don't think they heard any of the music or the verses that were read, they were definitely in their own world. I'm so happy for them.

After greeting them both, and Angela's parents, I went in to the reception. But I left after a couple minutes. I think I felt sorry for myself for being there by myself and having such an overwhelming feeling of love everywhere. I didn't know anyone and tried introducing myself to a few people. But I felt uncomfortable so I just decided to leave.

Student Denied Diploma After Blowing Kiss

STANDISH, Maine -- Justin Denney's family watched as he ascended the Cumberland County Civic Center stage during graduation Friday night to accept his diploma, but the superintendent told him to return to his seat.

The Bonny Eagle High School senior's mother said she can't believe her son's taking a bow and blowing a kiss on stage led was grounds for the superintendent to withhold his diploma.

Mary Denney wants an apology, and her son wants his diploma, reported WMTW-TV in Portland, Maine.

"I'm like, 'Did she not hand him his diploma?' I'm like, 'What's going on?'" Mary Denney said.

She said she and Justin both signed a code of conduct regarding the graduation when she picked up graduation tickets on Friday, but she doesn't think he violated it.

"There was no misbehavior. Showboating is not misbehavior," Mary Denney said. "A bow, a kiss to your mom is not misbehavior. There was no need of my son not getting his diploma."

WMTW tried to contact the district's superintendent and the school's principal, but neither returned the calls by Monday evening.

Before the school began handing out diplomas, some students pulled out beach balls. One student was forced to sit away from his classmates with staff while police escorted another student behind the stage.

"No arrests were made," Cumberland County Sheriff's Department Deputy Chief Kevin Joyce said. "The individual that was escorted off the stage was asked to leave the civic center. He was to the point where the deputy was starting to get to the point where he wanted to arrest the individual, but gave him several opportunities to settle down. Eventually, he took off his cap and gown and threw it at the deputy and walked out the civic center."

The deputy returned to the crowd and took another beach ball away from the students, but Mary Denney said School Area District 6 Superintendent Suzanne Lukas was still upset.

"When she got up there and started speaking, they threw out a couple more balls and she turned around and said, 'More people may not be graduating today if this continues,'" Mary Denney said.

While in his seat or waiting in line for his diploma, Justin Denney never touched a beach ball, his mother said. After his name was called, he took a bow, blew a kiss to his family and pointed to friends, but he didn't get his diploma, leaving a whole family in disbelief.

"I said, 'What did she ask you?' And, he goes, 'She said, 'There's no fooling around up here,' and he just kind of looked at her because he wasn't fooling around," Mary Denney said. "He didn't consider that fooling around or misbehaving in any sense of the word, and she goes, 'Why do you feel you deserve your diploma?' He goes, 'Because I worked hard and I earned it,' and she goes, 'No, go take your seat.'"

The crowd booed, but Justin Denney still doesn't have his diploma. Now, his mother wants her son to get what he's worked so hard for.

"It was appalling, and I want justice for my son. I want her to apologize to my son and I want her to hand him his diploma while he is in his cap and gown," Mary Denney said.

Both of Justin Denney's grandparents are ill and one of their wishes was to see their grandson graduate from high school, Mary Denney said.

Mary Denney said she is planning a graduation party for her son in two weeks, which, by then, she said she hopes she will have a photograph of her son with his diploma.

what is your gift?

Your Gift is Sensitivity

You are easily moved, and you have a strong emotional reaction to almost everything.

Your sensitivity helps you get a lot out of life. You appreciate every moment more.

It's hard for you to divorce yourself from your feelings. You notice every little thing around you.

You're the type of person who finds empathy and compassion easy.

NJ high school prank leaves people gnomeless

The Associated Press

Police in one southern New Jersey town have 75 gnomes without homes.

Police say eight Ocean City High School students gathered the dwarflike figures and strategically placed them on the school's lawn Thursday.

No one has reported any gnomes missing and police are treating the incident as a graduation prank.

Police suspect the gnomes were taken from around Cape May County. But principal Matthew Jamison says he's not sure if they were stolen or purchased at flea markets.

As for the gnomes, they're not talking.

Lt. Steven Ang says most "exercised their constitutional right not to speak to police."

‘Law & Order’ star to address P.I. alma mater

By Jen Lynds
BDN Staff

BANGOR DAILY NEWS FILE PHOTO
Growing up in Presque Isle inspired Broadway actor and playwright John Cariani to tell stories about rural life in his romantic comedy "Almost, Maine."

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — A Presque Isle High School graduate who is now an actor and playwright will return to his roots tonight when he addresses the PIHS Class of 2009.

John Cariani, who grew up in Presque Isle and graduated from Presque Isle High School in 1987, has appeared on NBC’s “Law & Order” and has taken roles in movies headlined by stars such as Christopher Walken and Robert DeNiro. He won critical acclaim in 2004 for his performance as Motel the tailor in the Broadway revival of “Fiddler on the Roof.” The role earned him an American Theatre Wing’s Tony nomination for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical.

Judy Cleaves, an administrative assistant at PIHS, said Thursday that Principal Eric Waddell contacted Cariani and asked him to speak.

Superintendent Gehrig Johnson said he and others are looking forward to the speech.

“He is one of our own,” he said Thursday. “This is very exciting, and I know the graduates will enjoy it.”

Cariani and his younger brother, Jeff, were in grade school when their family moved from Massachusetts to Presque Isle, according to previous BDN reports. Cariani’s father, Paul, served as president and chief executive officer of Maine Public Service Co., while his mother, Sheila, taught at Pine Street Elementary School.

Cariani graduated from Amherst College in Massachusetts with a bachelor’s degree in history.

“Law & Order” writers later gave him a regular role on the show as Julian Beck, an expert on blood, dirt and shoe tracks.

Cariani also has appeared on other television shows and in films.

In 2006, Cariani became a playwright after penning “Almost, Maine” a romantic comedy about residents of a town loosely based on Presque Isle.

The play debuted off-Broadway and was presented by the Portland Stage Company and the Penobscot Theatre Company in Bangor. It also was performed by a traveling Penobscot Theatre troupe.

Graduation is scheduled to be held at 7 tonight in the lower gym of the high school.

punkin'

It's 11:39 on a Friday night and I'm still up!!!!!!!

graduations...

Just getting back from a reception that my dad hosted for the local high school's graduation speaker--a friend of mine who is also a former student of my parents that is an actor & playwright. I wish I could've heard his graduation talk, everyone was raving about his warmth and connection to the audience. Hopefully someone was videotaping and I can get to see it, I'll have to email the principal and ask about that.

Last week I created a FaceB*ok account and have been getting in touch with some high school friends I haven't heard from in over twenty years. That plus the end of the school year and graduations and so forth has got me thinking and reminiscing about days gone by. I definitely am not glamorizing the past but I wonder what I would do differently if I could do it again. Mostly I realize I don't fit in with this generation. And that makes me feel old. And a little sad about being old. And nostalgic.

ten things tuesday...

Ten things I need to do to finish off the school year:

1) Pack up my books. A new heating system is supposed to be put in place over the summer and our rooms are supposed to be torn apart. I've got to pack up all my beautiful supplemental photo books.

2) Copy exams. I have more students taking exams this year than ever before.

3) Prepare course evaluations. Must photocopy and get a box to put them in so they can be completed anonymously.

4) Organize my file cabinet. There are a few old files that I should get rid of.

5) Finish grades. I've got to get organized for final report cards. And double-check the comments.

6) End of year paperwork. That includes creating a room repair list... which is going to have the same three items it's had for the past four years.

7) Book inventory. Collect and inspect the texts, and figure out how to store them this summer.

8) Organize computer files. We are supposed to turn in our laptops to get newer/better/faster ones for the upcoming school year. I've got to organize all the files and clean off the hard drive.

9) Undecorate. All the posters, bulletin boards, wall hangings and student work have to be taken down, sorted and stored.

10) Survive. I've got to make it through the next nine days. They are dragging. And I'm losing my patience with snotty students.

are you high maintenance?

You Are Low Maintenance

Compared to most people, you are incredibly easy going.

To be honest, you are truly a breath of fresh air.

You are open minded about trying new things, and you're not upset when things don't work out.

You are willing to go along to get along. And your attitude helps you truly enjoy life!

what pet are you like?

You Are Like a Horse

You are strong, steady, and devoted. You are a good partner.

You are gentle and sensitive. You can be easily frightened.

You are usually quite stable, but you do have a wild streak that comes out from time to time.

You are cooperative and not a solitary creature. You like to be around others.

what season do you feel like?

You Feel Like Autumn

You have reached a point in your life where you feel successful and accomplished.

You have a full, bountiful life. And you're ready to sit back and enjoy it.

While you feel like you finally have enough in your life, you make find that you also have things you no longer need.

This is a time for you to reassess who you are, what you need, and where you want to go next in your life.

You Are Highly Inspiring

You believe that your life has a higher purpose, and you do all you can to achieve it.

You are wise, and a lot of your wisdom comes from self discipline.

You try to live as moderately and modestly as possible.

You make room for rational, small indulgences... while living as ethically as you can.
