challenge

8/30--Having a local movie theater makes me happy. I don't go as often as I should. There's something about the big screen. There's something about the communal experience of watching movies that I love. And there's the popcorn scent.

just watched...

If this film was set in a fictitious time period, it would be that much funnier. It's hard for me to find a film set during WWII, involving Nazis, funny. That being said, this isn't really a film about WWII. Not historically, anyhow. Maybe it's a dream about how we wish the war went. What splits me, is how funny some of the dialogue is. There are moments when I was laughing out loud, others when I chuckled, and some when I just harumphed.

In true Tarantino form, there is over-the-top violence that is so horrific it's almost comic. I did gasp a couple of times.

i say... and you think...?

2. Impasse :: stalled
3. Gravy :: Wavy Gravy
4. You are :: I am

7. Training :: practice
8. Crap! :: Oh No!
9. Results :: outcome

Burglars Using Facebook, Twitter to Find Targets: Report
Insurance Company Warns That Social Media Sites Give Potential Thieves Important Infomation
Reuters

SYDNEY (Reuters Life!) - Facebook users enthusing about an upcoming holiday or a recently purchased high-tech gadget may not just be telling their friends but also potential burglars, warns an insurance company.

A survey of 2,092 social media users by British-based Legal & General found nearly four in ten, or 38 percent, of people using social networking sites like Facebook or Twitter post details about holiday plans and 33 percent details of a weekend away.

"Coupled with the finding that an alarmingly high proportion of users are prepared to be 'friends' online with people they don't really know, this presents a serious risk to the security of people's home and contents," said the insurer.

In a report called "The Digital Criminal," Legal & General said people used social media sites to connect with people who were essentially strangers, which could provide potential thieves with vital, personal information.

To test how readily people accepted 'friends' online, Legal & General's survey, conducted by European market researcher Opinion Matters, involved sending out 100 'friend' or 'follow' requests to strangers selected at random.

Of those 13 percent were accepted on Facebook and 92 percent on Twitter -- without any checks.

But despite these new 'friends,' the survey found that nearly two-thirds, or 64 percent, of 16-24 year olds shared their holiday plans, with younger users the most likely to give away information about their whereabouts.

Men were found to be quite relaxed about giving personal information online, with 13 percent including their mobile number on their profile compared with 7 percent of women. Nine percent of men also posted their address compared to 4 percent of women.

"This reaction could result in a complete stranger potentially being able to learn about a person's interests, location and movements in and out of their home," said Legal & General.

Reformed burglar Michael Fraser, who appears in BBC's "Beat The Burglar" series and helped Legal & General prepare the report, said this kind of information was being used by professional burglars to establish a list of targets.

As well as information about trips away, people were posting party photos showing the interiors of homes and also chatting about their cool new purchases and presents.

"I call it "Internet shopping for burglars." It is incredibly easy to use social networking sites to target people, and then scope out more information on their actual home ... all from the comfort of the sofa," said Fraser in a statement.

"There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that burglars are using social networks to develop relationships with people to identify likely targets."

what planet does your name come from?

First name:

Your Name Comes From the Sun

You are fiery, intense, and passionate. You never do anything halfway.

You are a natural leader, and you often find yourself ruling over others.

Ever since you were very young, you've always had a clear idea of your life's purpose.

You know that you will leave a strong mark on the world and greatly influence the lives of others.

Last name:

Your Name Comes from Mars

You have a lot of fire in your heart, and you are highly competitive as a result.

You need to stay active and productive to be happy. You like to depend on yourself and yourself alone.

You can be jealous at times, and you don't trust others easily. You've been burned in the past, and you still feel it.

You tend to overwhelm people at first. You put it all out there, and your personality is a bit intimidating.

ten things tuesday...

Ten silly wishes:

1) I wish I would win the lottery. And win a HUGE payoff. I wonder how much I would let it go to my head?

2) I wish I could take time off during the Holiday season to go to New York City. Nothing would thrill me more than 5th Avenue's window displays or watching skaters at Rockefeller. Ooooh, seeing the Rockett's holiday show would be a blast!

3) I wish there was a way to not have to read a whole book to get what it's about, especially if it's not a book I'm enjoying reading. Thinking of the past couple book group picks that I didn't read all the way through because they didn't trip my trigger. And I don't mean Sparknotes or Cliff Notes.

4) I wish that I could walk through the front door and have everything magically in its place.

5) I wish I didn't have to be a grown up all the time. Maybe that's what I like about spending so much time with teenagers.

6) I wish the weather was always like today--70s, nice breeze, no humidity, plenty of sunshine and big puffy clouds.

7) I wish I could go on a cool trip with my whole family. That everyone could afford it and that all the kids would be able to go, too.

8) I wish I could lose weight by wishing it were so.

9) I wish I lived closer to a bustling metropolis. Living on the edge of the world gets to me sometimes.

10) I wish every day was fun. Most of them have moments of fun, I'll grant that. I do laugh a lot.

8/24--Getting a lot of plans made for the next few weeks. Two five-day weeks followed by two four-day weeks and then it's vacation for three weeks!

negotiations and love songs...

Well, maybe not the love songs part. But I'm on the contract negotiations team and we're going into the big meeting tomorrow night. Today we had an association meeting and then we had a negotiations meeting. What a long day. This is an interesting process and I'm curious to see how it all goes.

I've got some combinations of students that are testing my patience. I mean, you have to teach people how to treat you and so far there are a couple classes that I'm on the wrong foot. One class has some mean girls. They do their own thing regardless of the directions I give them. If they weren't so bitchy I could put up with it. But their bitchiness is over the top. And it's hard to not respond in kind. It really makes me wonder why they come to school at all. I mean, they aren't there to learn and it's like I'm interfering with their time.

This could be an interesting year.

what kind of movie should you watch tonight?

You Should Watch an Action Movie

You like to stay busy and active. You don't need thrills, but you do need something to do.

You are bored easily, and nothing bores you more than a slow paced movie. You need things to be moving along.

You tend to be a very open and honest person. You cut to the chase. You don't have time to couch what you're saying.

You like to have a lot of friends and be in the middle of what's going on. You rarely pass up an opportunity to go out.

pants on fire...

I had an awkward conversation with a parent yesterday. Already. I mean, we're one full week into the school year. So, Thursday I sent the naughty boy to the office for not doing the assignment during class. Sounds innocent enough but it was three days of not doing the assignment during class and assuring me the work is done yet being unable to produce said done work. He needed to make up a thirty-minute video because he got dismissed and missed it when I showed it during class. He told me he was unable to come in before school to watch it because he had morning detention. I told him that I would email the detention monitor and make arrangements for him to serve detention and watch the video at the same time. The monitor told me he didn't have any record of the boy owing detention and then called the assistant principal to double check. The assistant principal agreed the boy didn't owe time. So, he's caught in a lie.

Long story short, the mother and I talked on the phone for a good fifteen minutes and unraveled more of the boy's lies. He lied and lied and lied. To both of us. What a way to start out the school year?

Have I mentioned I hate liars? Do I need to?

challenge

8/18--a refreshing, humidity-busting thunder storm!

ten things tuesday...

Ten things about hot and humid days:

1) Living in Northern Maine, we don't get a lot of hot & humid weather, so when we do, we kind of don't know how to handle it.

2) School days drag minute by minute when it's above 80 degrees in the classroom. Today I got up to 89 degrees.

3) Sweaty bodies in a classroom are aromatic. Not necessarily in a good way.

4) Hot & humid days make me puff up. My eyes, fingers, ankles are all puffy.

5) I don't sleep well when it's hot and humid. That makes me drowsy at weird times during the day.

6) Not sleeping also makes me a bit short-tempered. Which is unfortunate when it's the beginning of the school year and I need to be extra patient as students get to know me and I get to know them.

7) Whining doesn't help.

8) Today the Senior class bought Popsicles for the student body. It was a real treat in the middle of the afternoon.

9) Although whining doesn't help, sometimes it good to get things off your chest.

10) Cold, cold water is fantastic.

Becca's back!!

Give Me Five memorable things you have done before.

1) kissed the Blarney Stone
2) watched the city of Paris light up at dusk
3) climbed to the top of Sagrada Familia in Barcelona
4) taken a night tour of the monuments at Washington, DC.
5) bicycled around the southern part of the Netherlands

all together now...

Not sure what it has to do with beer, but it's a cool video.

it's so darn hot...

Today's haiku from school:

Eighty-plus degrees
Call it glisten or glowing
By day's end, I stink.

It felt longer than an hour.
