You Are Sophisticated and Well Mannered |
![]() You're the type of person who can sit all day entertaining guests with witty banter. You believe in presenting yourself in the best light possible. You like to be seen as classy. You give a first impression of being upper class and even a bit snooty. And you're the first to admit you're a little guilty of that. You are an armchair critic. You can detect quality easily, and you want the best things you can find. |

Your Name is Red |

ten things tuesday...
Ten things I love about my sisters.
1) The inexplicable bond we have that is more than friendship.
2) Shared history and appreciation that each of us experienced things slightly differently because of our ages and stages.
3) Acceptance. Total and complete, unconditional acceptance.
4) Playfulness. Love when we giggle like little girls and drive everyone around us crazy.
5) Whispering in the kitchen. We'll always find something to whisper about. And it always seems to happen in the kitchen.
6) Sharing. What's mine is theirs and vice versa.
7) Common interests. It's nice to share the same pursuits or at least appreciate them. One of my sisters is brilliantly creative at making cards and I love to dabble and she encourages me.
8) Cooking. There is always food somehow involved in a girly get together.
9) The Sisters. The fact that we are referred to as "The Sisters."
10) Laughing. No one makes me laugh harder than the sisters do. Laughing so hard I was sore the next day.
Bonus: 11) They have graced my life with beautiful nieces and nephews. I love their families.

the queen's meme
1. What is the strangest thing that has ever happened to you in a hospital (besides your illness)? Not enough towels? No condiments? Can't get your favorite channels? Come on, you can tell me. **Or....maybe this answer doesn't involve you being the patient.** a year ago, my dad's room mate was quite a character. He'd talk out loud all the time, we could never figure out if he was talking to us or talking to himself... he did both often.
2. If you had your choice of IV cocktails, what would you choose? something with xanax.
3. Tell us your funniest hospital story. My parents were visiting me when my blind date showed up. Yup. I had a blind date while I was in the hospital. He said it was either true that I was hospitalized or the worst way he'd ever been dumped.
4. Do you have any hospital phobias? oh yes, I didn't even go visit people in the hospital. So being in there myself was quite a trip. I told my doctor about my anxiety, though, and he finagled me a private room. There is no way I would have lasted with a roomie. I still have anxiety going to visit people but at least now I can go.
5. Imagine you are in bed trying to get some sleep after a long night of interruptions by the nurse on duty who would NOT stop waking you up to see if you were asleep...It is 3am. You finally get to sleep. She comes in at 3:15 and wakes you up again. What happens next? I started crying. It happened to me. She finally gave me something to help me sleep and off I went to la-la land.
6. You are stuck in the elevator with an attractive person of the opposite sex. You notice there is no wedding band. Do you strike up a conversation? If so, what is the first thing you would say? I don't know, it would depend on my mood or why I was at the hospital.
7. A very odd patient wanders into your room from the upstairs psychiatric ward. What do you do? call the nurse

What is the longest time you've gone with your Internet not working in your home? a weekend... I didn't think I could survive
How many email addresses do you regularly use? four... gee that sounds like a lot but one for school, one for junk mail, one for business and one for everything else
Are you able to access the Internet on your phone? If so, how frequently do you use it? nope, but I would use it a lot

home again, home again, jiggety jig

Woke up to rain. It rained the entire drive home. Sometimes heavy, often with fog. Nasty stuff.
It was a great adventure. And a wonderful visit with my sisters and their families. Now I've got a couple of weeks of vacation. Hopefully, there will be some great leaf-peeping weather.

Sunday Stealing: A Fall Meme
It’s not really fall in until... there is a crispness in the air, pumpkins can be readily found, the leaves change and it's Harvest Break from school
What did you need to do in the waning days of summer for it to feel complete? get a haircut and color, mani/pedi
A person I know was wrong for me but about whom I frequently thought after a break-up was... all of my exs
If you could only attend one major sporting event what would it be? the Super Bowl
Assuming that you write an anonymous or partially anonymous blog, by what non-physically identifying characteristics might you be identified in a bar? I'm the one laughing with a big group of friends (male & female)
Most blogs cover some sort of niche – personal, political, dating, culinary, etc. What topic, if any, would you like to address on your blog but doesn’t fit into your niche? I'd like to talk politics more
If you could manipulate the time space continuum and give as many as three pieces of advice to a younger version of yourself, what advice would you give and to what age of you? 1) never pass up an opportunity to go to the bathroom; 2) save your money; 3) don't sweat the small stuff
Who among your friends do you really wish had a blog because their stories, or perspective on something ought to be shared? Alana
If you were to take an e-cation (vacation from the trappings of our electronic world,) and assuming that employment obligations would allow it, how long of a break could you take? What would you miss the most, the least? I'd miss email the most... and blogging
On September 11th of this year, I attended a couple of parties and was somewhat conflicted by the fact that this ignoble anniversary shall pass with it being just another day in the eyes of many (and in some ways my own eyes as well.) Thoughts? we had a school dance and the same quandary... We did have a moment of silence during the school day.
How high are your walls? Who was the last person to scale them? What tools should would-be climbers have on their belt? I make friends quite easily and allow people in, but my best friends know I have some serious walls in place and that to know the "real" me it takes a lot of patience and humor

lonely journey

Current location is South Portland. But tomorrow I finish up the trip to the top of Maine.
I'm lonely today after spending the week with my sisters and their families. I gabbed and yakkety-yakked so much it was much too lonely on the ride back.
My brother-in-law gave me directions through Western PA so I would avoid the cities on the way home, it was a fairly straight shot on each of the routes. In Connecticut, though, Eleanor Rigby wasn't getting a satellite signal, which was really weird.
What a great vacation I've had. I can't wait to do the trip again. Next time I'll definitely stay longer.
saturday 9

I Call Your Name
1. If you could have named yourself, which name would you have chosen, and why? I like my name. If I chose my own name, it would be a vowel name. But I don't know what.
2. If you could relive a year in your life, what age would it be, and why? it would be great to go back to living in Ireland--so the year I was 22.
3. If you could go back and change one friendship in your past, who would it have been, and why? I had an important friendship dissolve because we went in different directions. That's the one I would revisit.
4. If you could have dated one person in your past that you did not date, who would it be, and why? uh... can't think of anyone.
5.If you could say one thing/idea/sentiment to someone in your past, what would it be, and why? I would have told a friend to move on and help with that process
6. If you had the opportunity to live in another country, which one would it be, and why? If you choose NOT to live in another country, why do you want to stay in your current country?I would love to live in Ireland again. It felt magical to me.
7. If you could choose your dream job, what would it be, and why? I'd be a professional philanthropist... how fun is it to make other people's dreams reality?
8. If you could wish a wish and it be guaranteed to come true (other than riches) what would it be, and why? world peace. Or world domination.
9. If you could meet two blogger friends (you may choose more, if you wish) who would they be? I would like to meet all my blog friends!

virginia

Yesterday, my Pennsylvania sister and I traveled through Maryland, West Virginia to get to Virginia sister's house. Eleanor Rigby (my GPS) took us on a rather back woods, circuitous route to get here, avoiding the major city, but we got here.
It's beautiful and we're having a blast. I've never traveled through so many states, this is really exciting for me.
The dog is definitely a puppy.

ten things tuesday...
The Pennsylvania edition:
1) I am spending a leisurely morning with my sister's very sweet dog. Just hanging out. It feels like vacation.
2) Yesterday I spent the whole afternoon with my nephew. We talked about everything. He showed me some of his hunting videos and lots of pictures. Then he made a travel CD for me.
3) I've had a lot of fun with my niece. She was excited for me to get here and we spent some quality time bonding. Plus, I was able to visit her at work and we had lunch together with her mom.
4) I haven't had any anxiety.
5) My sister's home is welcoming. I love it here. It's surrounded by trees and you can hear crickets all the time. Lots of birds singing and the occasional deer walks by.
6) Last night we were playing with photobooth in my computer and we laughed so hard we're both sore today. That's the good kind of sore. We almost had some Dep*nds moments, too. I think we need to get out more if taking silly photos caused that much hilarity.
7) Their sweetie dog is the reason Dad & Barb got a Bichon. Sugar is such a good girl and a wonderful companion. And very different than Maggie. I can't wait for them to meet.
8) Navigating the twisty, narrow country roads has been a great challenge. Last night my brother in law took us to see Three Mile Island, which is just down the road a bit. He barrels along, avoiding deer... we laughed about how I am putting along like a nana when I'm out. But Eleanor Rigby has not steered me wrong!
9) Today is shopping. I'm looking forward to poking around some local shops.
10) Tonight I get to watch my sister teach a card making class. She is incredibly creative. It'll be fun.

give me five monday
# 52
Becca's back!!
Give Me Five of your favorite drinks.
1) Water. Plain, room temperature water for the most part, but I always appreciate cold water on a hot day.
2) Iced coffee. Preferably Dunkin' Donuts. But McDonald's will do in a pinch.
3) Diet Orange Dry by Polar. Yummy, sparkling and refreshing.
4) Diet Coke. Especially with lime. Double especially out of the fountain, which I don't have often because of germ phobia stuff.
5) Hot cocoa. I live in the Great White North. 'Nuf said.

just another manic monday...
Would you be willing to have horrible nightmares every night for a year if you would be rewarded with extraordinary wealth? no, I don't think so... even though I can be greedy
What was the most recent movie that made you cry? The Family Stone, I watched it at the hotel Saturday night. I laughed and I cried.
Would you rather be stranded on an island alone or with someone you hate? I don't mind being by myself, although I can't think of anybody I hate... but I think I'll go alone

arrival #1

So, I made it! Took I-95S most of the way, even though it wasn't the route my brothers-in-law recommended. But it's how Eleanor told me to get here. I named my GPS Eleanor Rigby because she needed a name. She's a great travel companion.
My sister is working today, in order to have the rest of the week off to play with me. I've toodled around town, done a bit of shopping, and am ready now to go fetch lunch for her and her daughter. If I can figure out where to park. Then it's wasting the rest of the afternoon--maybe a nap??--before Chinese Buffet night.
I spoke with my Virginia sister this morning, for a long time, and we're both excited for that part of the trip, mid-week.
All in all it's been awesome. Good thing I love my car. And very good thing I'm not afraid of bridges--I had to cross some doozies (including the George Washington Bridge in NYC) yesterday.
Anyhow, I'm here and I'm playing with the dog. Life is good.

saturday 9

The Last Time
1. When was the last time you bought something for someone else, and what was it? I bought a birthday cake for my nephew
2. When was the last time you complimented someone, and what was their reaction? last week I talked to a customer service rep on the phone and spoke to the supervisor to compliment the excellent service, the reaction was enthusiastic, I don't think people take the time to do that often enough--but complain when something's wrong.
3. When was the last time you had to return a purchase to the store? What was it and why? I do not remember
4. When was the last time you had an ice cream cone? cone? hmmm, it's been a while, but I eat ice cream regularly at home
5. When was the last time you had to go to the doctor's office? I can't remember... but my yearly physical is in a couple weeks
6. When was the last time you were embarrassed by something you did? What was it and what happened? oh, lord, I had a doozie yesterday by explaining what Edubabble Bingo was not knowing my superintendent was sitting directly behind me
7. When was the last time a stranger was kind to you? a kind gentleman held the door for me today
8. When was the last time you locked yourself out of your home? What did you do? I have a spare key in a safe place at home, so when I'm locked out it's not a biggie.
9. When was the last time you thought about cheating (on anything, a test or a person)? uhmmmm... I sped today if that counts as cheating??

are you protein, carbs or fat?
You Are Fat |
![]() You are by no means fat, but you are like fat in that you can easily absorb what's around you. You are easily influenced by both the good and bad people in your life. It's important for you to be around people you want to be like. You are a comforting and calming force. Without your presence, people feel unsatisfied. You sometimes have a reputation for being a bad influence, but you're not nearly as dangerous as you seem. |

a first of many firsts...

Today I made the hotel reservation for Phase 1 of my big road trip. I've been thinking about and wanting to go visit my sisters in Pennsylvania and Virginia forever. And the time is now. I'm going to be on a three-week break from school with a little bit of savings and a 2-year old car in excellent shape. If I don't do it now, I never will. I invited my oldest sister to come with me but she isn't able to get the time off from her job. Bummer. That means I am going to make the trip by myself. But I've visited Google maps and printed off my route, I'll have plenty of good music and I can do it. I'm ticking things off the list I made for my Ten Things Tuesday and am making mental plans for the rest of what I need to do before I hit the road.
I'm so excited. And I'm so glad I'm doing this. I've never taken a road trip like this by myself. I've never even made hotel reservations for just myself. I've made them for groups I chaperon or when I've traveled with other people but never just for myself.
My Virginia sister would like us to take a day-trip to Monticello, and since I'm such a Jefferson fan, I can't wait to walk through the gardens and his home.

ten things tuesday
So, here are ten things I've got to do before I hit the road Saturday:
1) Print out maps. Having directions will be helpful.
2) Make hotel reservations.
3) Have an oil change. Actually, I'm doing the oil change Saturday morning and heading south from there.
4) Pack! Egads, I've got to figure out what to wear.
5) Get music organized. It's going to be a lot of quality time by myself in the car, I've got to have some great tunage. And no, I can't listen to books on tape--I tune it out.
6) Email my plans to the whole family. That way people here can keep an eye on things and people there know when to expect me.
7) Reschedule my pedicure. My appointment is for a week from Saturday and I want to be flexible about when I'm coming home.
8) Figure out what my sisters will want me to bring to them.
9) Recharge my batteries--phone, camera, etc.
10) Stop being nervous. Well, excited and nervous. This is a big adventure for me to take by myself.

the queen's meme
1. Are you a Rolex watch, a Mickey Mouse watch, or a pocket watch? I think I'm more of a Timex--takes a licking and keeps on ticking (get your mind out of the gutter!)
2. Can you think of a time when you couldn't see the forest for the trees? oh yes, after the student threatened me I was a nervous, paranoid wreck
3. Can you think of a time when you were on the outside looking in? regularly
What did you see? usually, my friends waiting for me to join in
4. Go back in time. Maybe a long time ago, maybe today. Pick an hour you'd like to freeze frame forever and tell us why. It doesn't have to be THE most important hour of your life, but make it a good one. I don't know... there have been so many beautiful moments (like watching the city of Paris light up at dusk from the top of the Eiffel Tower)...
5. If you were a cuckoo clock, what would others say about you? keeps the time well
6. Can you think of a time when time stood still? oh yeah... during my accident last winter, time stood still in the inevitably of the accident
7. Watch this! You are a stopwatch. What would you stop? I'd stop the madness
8. Imagine you were just born and have infinite wisdom. After the doctor smacks your newborn dust ruffle you look around and say to the Universe: "Give me a whole lifetime to do "this" and I will bless the day I was born."
What did you choose? being surrounded by loved ones

Give Me Five of your favorite ways to be crafty or creative.
1) Blogging is a great opportunity for me to be creative.
2) Lesson planning. It's how to be creative within the parameters of the content. Dreaming up creative ways to engage students in musty-fusty history.
3) Bulletin boards. Are the visualization of the content we're working on in class. And they take a lot of effort.
4) Clothing and accessories. I actually feel creative when I put outfits together and accessorize. Especially after I discovered What Not To Wear.
5) Journaling. I use my journal for thoughts, ideas, rants, counting my blessings and all sorts of things.

montana skies
This duo performed at school yesterday--an assembly as well as an evening performance. They were fantastic! Unfortunately, the students at school don't know how to behave at a performance. There was a low murmur of voices through the entire performance. I got thinking about the fact that they probably have never been taught how to behave, how to be an audience. I thought everyone knew basic etiquette, but I suppose if no one's ever taught they wouldn't know. Besides, they chat through the movies and through things they watch at home. Maybe there aren't enough live performances?
Anyhow, back to Montana Skies--they are a cool fusion of guitar and cello. They arrange most of their own music and play everything from classical music to classic rock.

saturday 9

You Like Me Too Much
1. If everyone liked each other, what would we complain about? well, we'd complain that so-and-so is too nice or something that annoys us. Being annoyed doesn't mean we don't like.
2. If you were most powerful person in the world, how would you use that power? for good
3. If had exactly one year to live, what are the three things you'd want to do before you died? I wouldn't do or change anything--except I would seriously declutter
4. If you could change one thing about the world, what would that one thing be? give peace a chance
5. If you could take one thing back, what would that one thing be? probably something I said but nothing comes to mind right now
6. If you were stuck on an island forever but had all the water, food and shelter you needed. What would be the three other things you'd bring with you? books, unlimited supplies of paper and pens, decks of cards
7. If the internet didn't exist, would the quality of life go up or down? if we never had had it, the quality of life would go up, if it was taken away from us and we missed it, the quality of life would go down
8. If a million dollars fell off a back of a truck, would you keep it? I would do whatever it took to give it back, and then keep it if it legally came to me
9. What is something you said, something you stole, something you did wrong? I've often said the wrong thing at the wrong time, but nothing harmful, just embarrassing... I used to swipe stuff from my sisters to annoy them, and something I did wrong... sheesh... getting out of bed on the wrong side

we remember

America Remembers
Let us never forget September 11, 2001. The CNN site, 'America Remembers,' is a companion to the in-depth television special, "America Remembers." The sections on 'The Day,' 'The Faces,' 'The Cleanup, 'Fighting Terror,' and 'A Changed World' all have individual timelines as well as special reports and photo galleries. The 'News Headlines' will give you the latest on the proposed memorials and commemorative events. The entire site is a well-done tribute to the victims, the rescue workers and to the American public in addition to serving as a chronological recap of the events that will never be forgotten.

Inside the White House: Letters to the President

like a bird on a wire...
Birds on the Wires from Jarbas Agnelli on Vimeo.
“Birds on the Wires”, a beautiful video created by Jarbas Agnelli of São Paulo was created after he saw a picture in a newspaper.
"Reading a newspaper, I saw a picture of birds on the electric wires. I cut out the photo and decided to make a song, using the exact location of the birds as notes (no Photoshop edit)," said Agnelli.
"I knew it wasn't the most original idea in the universe. I was just curious to hear what melody the birds were creating," he continued.
Agnelli posted the video and credited Paulo Pinto with the photograph and credited the music…to the birds.
