yakkety-yak

Well, I did it. I put on my big girl pants and made the telephone call that's been looming over my weekend. I shouldn't have put it off because every scenario I imagined was wrong. It couldn't have gone smoother or better. And my apology was eloquent and sincere.
Moving on.

just finished watching...

I loved this movie. I don't care if a reviewer called it "Chick Porn" because it's the story of one woman being pursued by two men. I loved it. I believed everything Meryl Streep did and said. I can't wait to get this on DVD so I can watch the extras.

what US state are you?
You Are Massachusetts |
![]() You are smart, serious, and quite traditional. You don't have a lot of time for junk in your life. It's likely that you're well educated and hard working. You live a very goal oriented life. You are probably socially liberal, but personally quite conservative. You would never be described as wild. But you're more diverse than people give you credit for. workin' for the weekend
This week has sucked big time. Sucked the life right out of me. Exams. The entire schedule is modified for double-period exams with a period of study time before each double-period. Everyone's discombobulated because of the schedule change and the routine shake-up. Seeing students at the wrong time of the day, for purposes other than those we usually gather for and all that happy horseshit.
Plus, there's been a visit from the dramalama. A colleague has gone so far as to say, "I don't know how I can look people in the eye anymore." And my snarky inside self is saying, "woe, woe, woe is me..." Personalizing things and jumping to conclusions. Making assumptions and accusations. How did I get caught up in it? I'm not 100% sure, even. What has been said, though, by my mentor teacher is that I should consider going into professional arbitration. Muahahahahaha...
And now I'm out of my home-life routine because I'm puppy-sitting. I'm on my dad's computer which is NOTHING like my laptop. He has a standard keyboard and I'm used to my laptop or my ergonomic board. Oy. I'm not sleeping in my own bed, getting up earlier than usual to get to the crazy frenzy that's been school.
I want this week to end.
On a positive note, I had a great therapy session and I am handling the dramalama quite well, if I do say so myself.

ten things tuesday...
Ten things about exam week:
1) A lot of students don't know how to take an exam. Their study skills are poor and they don't know how to break a question down.
2) Reading the whole question and eliminating false options is a skill a lot of students don't seem to have.
3) I got a lot of lesson plans done while watching them take the test.
4) No one smiles during exams.
5) I worked on my school website, too.
6) The change of schedule has thrown a lot of people into a tailspin--teachers and students.
7) I skipped tutoring this week. It's been kinda nice to have the extra time to work on grades.
8) I spent a lot of time reviewing and preparing my students for the exam. I would have expected them to put some time in on their own.
9) The exam takes a while to correct. Although, I'm glad we modified the extended response question so it is a bit faster to correct.
10) I've got to finish my quarter grades and comments, too. Hopefully I will be done before the weekend so I can just chillax.

the queen's meme
1. Which historical figure do you admire the most? Why? well, there are so many options... today I would say Dolly Madison, she is pretty important
2. Name the band or artist you'd like to see live in concert before you leave the planet or tell us about a concert or album that has already rocked your world. I'd love to see U2 in a small venue
3. What's your favorite television show or series of all time? Why should I care? I don't have a favorite show of all time, I don't think... not one stands out as an all-time favorite... so, no, I don't think you should care
4. Movies! I am so behind on the movie scene. What should I watch this weekend? Should I watch it alone or with someone? I'm behind, too--I watched The Ugly Truth last weekend. It was cute.
5. You are hopping on a plane tomorrow morning. Where did you choose to go and why? there, because it's not here
6. Who is your favorite author? What about their writing inspires you or simply entertains you? Recommend at least one book that you feel I must read. I love Maeve Binchy. Light A Penny Candle is a favorite.
7. Hobbies and passions. What brings you joy in your spare time? How did you get into it? blogging... it was an assignment from my therapist

have patience
Have patience with everything
unresolved in your heart and try to
love the questions themselves, as if they
were locked rooms, or books
written in a very foreign language.
Don't search for the answers,
which could not be given to you
now, because you would not be
able to live them. And the point
is to live everything. Live the
questions now. Perhaps then, someday
far in the future, you will gradually,
without even noticing it, live
your way into the answer.

auditions...

Kinda glad the auditions are just an hour tonight. I really get bored during auditions. I prefer the Hollywood week and on, when we get to champion the hopefuls. Plus, I'm a little tired and would almost rather go to sleep. Interested to see how Kristin Chenowith does tonight.

the winner is...

I just love awards shows. Especially the Golden Globes which are slightly less formal than other shows. Oh, there's still glamor, inane comments, and goodie bags. Plus glorious George. But there's no clear path through the tables and I love watching the winners try to navigate around the room.

owie
Cut my finger building shelves for my daddy today. It's fun to hang out with my parentals and, of course, Maggie was in the thick of things. I love being able to do handy stuff for them.

what flavor hot chocolate are you?
You Are Caramel Hot Chocolate |
![]() You are a smooth character. You charm everyone who ever comes in contact with you. You are naturally sweet, but not too sweet. People get stuck on you without realizing it. You're the type to meet up with a bunch of friends for hot chocolate, especially after a day of sledding or ice skating. You try to never drink alone... even if it is hot chocolate. Warm, chocolatey goodness should be enjoyed with friends! |

tragedy

The news stories from Haiti are so very sad. What a tragedy. It was tough to decide how to make a donation--I worried about texting. Finally, I chose the Doctors Without Borders and Mercy Corps.

You Are More Like Audrey Hepburn |
![]() You are classy, stylish, and charming. You are the true definition of grace. Some people may think you're a pushover, but they have no idea how tough you can be. new tunes...
Got some new music lately: KD Lang's Hymns of the 49th Parallel, Kris Allen (reigning American Idol), and on Mrs. Chili's recommendation Vertical Horizon's Burning The Days. Now I need time to listen to it all.

is your focus inward or outward?
Your Focus is Inward |
![]() You prefer to spend most of your time alone. Other people tax your reserves. You appreciate and enjoy your own company. You can always find a way to entertain yourself. You don't believe in being bored. In fact, you don't think it's even possible. With so many ideas, books, and places to explore, you are never lonely - even if you're all by yourself. |

ten things tuesday...
Ten random things:
1) I feel like I'm being meeting-ed to death. Negotiations, association, faculty and other school-related meetings are constant the past couple of weeks.
2) I've been watching too much junky tv. I'm glad American Idol starts tonight so I can get into a regular watching routine.
3) Cookies are good. Particularly when they're slightly under-done and soft.
4) Last week was a hard week. Getting the students back into the swing of school, after vacation--and several of them whined and complained (ok, they actually bitched and moaned) about doing work. I felt demoralized and discouraged. It was awful.
5) There are moments when I feel like I've hit my stride, professionally. When things are clicking along and it seems like things are manageable.
6) There are moments I know I'm not doing the job I was meant to do. I still haven't figured out what my "it" job would be, but I don't think this is it.
7) I just got a couple of new CDs. I'm excited to listen to them.
8) I wish I could wear my comfy, loungy clothes to school. But, the first thing I do when I get home is change.
9) Positive feedback would make the atmosphere at school a lot better. There's a lot of stress, especially now that we're getting near mid-years and the end of the quarter.
10) I'm getting my Christmas/Valentine's/St. Patrick's gift to myself on Monday--a remote car starter! My last car had one and I reallllllllly miss it. So, I'm getting one installed Monday.
