another year gone...

Got a clean bill of health from my annual physical today. All the poking and prodding paid off! Neither of us could believe that a year has gone by so quickly.

what kind of apple are you?

You Are a Golden Delicious Apple

You have a glow to you, and you are naturally attractive. You know how to highlight your good points.

Beneath that shining exterior is a sensitive soul. You are more thin skinned that people realize.

You prefer others to be gentle with you. You need to be handled with care.

You may be fragile, but you're also tough deep down. You're firm enough to stand up for what you believe in.

Today's quotes are from Sir Paul McCartney:

1. “George wrote Taxman, and I played guitar on it. He wrote it in anger at finding out what the taxman did. He had never known before then what could happen to your money.” No one likes paying taxes. But do you think the tax system is fair? I think the system could be looked at and at the State level it needs a major overhaul

2. “I definitely did look up to John. We all looked up to John. He was older and he was very much the leader; he was the quickest wit and the smartest.” What did you think of John Lennon? I thought he was great

3. “I saw that Meryl Streep said, I just want to do my job well. And really, that's all I'm ever trying to do.” How do you approach your job whether in the workplace or at home? with dread for home stuff and at school I am always working to be my best

4. “I used to think anyone doing anything weird was weird. Now I know that it is the people that call others weird that are weird.” Have you found that you have more tolerance for unusual people as you get older? yes, very much so

5. “I don't take me seriously. If we get some giggles, I don't mind.” How seriously do you take yourself? sometimes too seriously... but more often than not I have a good sense of humor about myself

6. “I think people who create and write, it actually does flow-just flows from into their head, into their hand, and they write it down. It's simple.” Does your blog writing just flow from your head, or is it a lot of effort? it flows

7. “Think globally, act locally.” Do you do anything to help your local community? not as much as I should, I'm afraid

8. “When you first get money, you buy all these things so no one thinks you're mean, and you spread it around. You get a chauffeur and you find yourself thrown around the back of this car and you think, I was happier when I had my own little car! I could drive myself!” Have you ever had a period where you felt that you were set financially? never

9. “Lyricists play with words.” Do you think what you write on your blog is clever or just ordinary and why? I don't aim to be clever

10. “Where I come from, you don't really talk about how much you're earning. Those things are private. My dad never told my mum how much he was earning. I'm certainly not going to tell the world. I'm doing well.” Who in your circle knows how much money your family makes? I guess since most are also teachers it's not a big secret

Ten things about anxiety & me:

1) When I get anxious I perspire profusely.

2) When I get anxious I can't sit or stand still.

3) When I get anxious all I can think about is making an escape.

4) When I get anxious my clothes feel heavy against my skin. Even if I'm wearing my most comfy clothes.

5) When I get anxious going for a drive calms me down.

6) When I get anxious I want to be by myself.

7) When I get anxious I get even more anxious that the anxiousness won't go away.

8) When I get anxious I have no sense of humor.

9) When I get anxious my OCD rears its ugly head as I fight the urge to control the situation.

10) When I get anxious I love the calm after the storm. The feeling of mellow that leaves me in a puddle is delicious.

anxious...

Some of my anxiety buttons were pushed today. A colleague's mother passed away Sunday and the calling hours/funeral is Thursday. I have a lot of anxiety about going. I also have my yearly physical that afternoon, so the scheduling is a hassle. But just as I was talking myself through the anxiety, my landlord called. He's coming over tomorrow to remove my broken couch and put up a bookcase for me. Now that sounds simple enough, but I'm a hoarder. Not so bad as the tv hoarders, but... yeah. Needless to say, I have a lot of anxiety about people coming into my home. I had to sort through a lot of stuff today. And progress was made. I'm determined to keep up with the de-cluttering.

Thankfully, I had therapy this afternoon and could talk about a lot of this.

yes, sir!

Delight In Life

Scorpio Daily Horoscope

You could be in high spirits today, which may motivate you to seek out new activities. It might seem that your inner joys about being alive are in harmony with the wonders you see in the world around you, which could compel you to share these feelings with others. Today would be a good time to break loose from your normal routine and allow yourself to feel free and in the moment. You might find a fun venue such as an outdoor concert, festival, or group picnic to enjoy with your friends. Find a way to engage in something that fills you with the pleasure of togetherness and a feeling of shared marvel at the richness the world offers you. You may notice that you feel energized and inspired in all aspects of your life as a result.

Allowing ourselves to feel uninhibited and in the moment imbues our lives with a sense of joy and wonder. When we are in the now, we see that there is nothing that we lack. We enjoy the beauty of the present and feel at one with everything in the world. This sense of connectedness in turn fills us with the desire to share our feelings of delight with others. We learn to relish in the miracle that play brings into our lives, liberate our routines from the mundane, and infuse our days with activities that feed our spirits. By letting yourself take pleasure in everything that life has to offer in a social setting today, you will increase the quality of your life enormously.

lurve...

This was such a great season premiere!

ten things tuesday...

Ten things about my classroom. As I am sitting here wasting time, waiting for a dinner meeting...

1) I have posters from Values.com, The Foundation For A Better Life organization gracing the back wall. My students are fascinated by Nola Ochs, the 95-year-old college graduate. They are completely gobsmacked when I tell them that she was the oldest person to graduate from college and then three years later to graduate with her Master's Degree. (and the posters were free!!!)

2) One bulletin board is covered with Founding Fathers Farcebook posters. It's a take off of Facebook. They are clever. I have a set for the Founders and another set for the Civil War era. I'm going to order a blank set and have the students make posters from influential people from our AP books.

3) There are dead flies on the windowsills. Because I'm not gonna clean them up!

4) I have very neat chalk board writing. I'm sure it would be nicer on a white board, though.

5) I've asked for white boards for twelve years. Still don't have them.

6) A beautiful placard hangs above the board with William Penn's quote:

I shall pass through this life but once.
Any good, therefore, that I can do
Or any kindness I can show to any fellow creature,
Let me do it now.
Let me not defer or neglect it,
For I shall not pass this way again.

7) I wish I could get channels on my television. I don't get cable in the classroom, though, so unless I'm playing music, there's nothing going on. And right now I'm not playing music. Although I may have to dig something out...

8) It's time to empty the bottle bin. I was hoping to squeeze one more day in, since we're going on Harvest Break, but it looks like I've got to put in a new liner.

9) I made all the plans, reservations, accommodations, and arrangements for the workshop I'm going to Friday. Two other people are going but they didn't do anything to get ready.

10) If I sit still for too long, I haven't quite figured out how long, the lights go off and I have to roll around a little bit in my chair to turn them back on. It happened while I was writing this.

just another manic monday...

If you were determining who could immigrate here, would you let in those who you thought would contribute the most to our country or those in the most need of refuge? I'd have to say that those in the most need of refuge--for we don't know what talents they bring with them to contribute to our country. History repeats.

Would you vote for a political candidate who was honest, competent, and concurred with your position on most issues if you also knew she was an alcoholic who was promiscuous? I'm not sure the candidate can be competent and be an alcoholic. I've known a few functioning alcoholics but, the booze catches up eventually.

what season tree are you?

You Are a Summer Tree

You are constantly buzzing with excitement. You love being a part of the world.

You're very social, and you usually aren't far from your friends and family.

You enjoy the good times while they last. You savor every sweet moment.

You know that things eventually change, but you wish they could be like this forever.

just finished reading...

The Postmistress is historical fiction set during WWII and it centers on three women--Frankie Bard, a radio reporter; Iris James, the postmistress; and Emma Fitch, the doctor's wife.

My bestie recommended this but didn't tell me it is sad. It's evocative of the era and it was engaging to all the senses. There were times that made me wonder why the title is the Postmistress when I didn't think she was the focal point of the book. For as critical as I may sound, I really liked this book and recommend it.

America Remembers

Let us never forget September 11, 2001. The CNN site, 'America Remembers,' is a companion to the in-depth television special, "America Remembers." The sections on 'The Day,' 'The Faces,' 'The Cleanup, 'Fighting Terror,' and 'A Changed World' all have individual timelines as well as special reports and photo galleries. The 'News Headlines' will give you the latest on the proposed memorials and commemorative events. The entire site is a well-done tribute to the victims, the rescue workers and to the American public in addition to serving as a chronological recap of the events that will never be forgotten.

thursday bug

Sometimes it helps to share with others what bugs your mind.
They may have a solution, a kind word, or a smile of encouragement.
This week my thursday bug is:

So much to do, so little time.
