new year's eve meme

I did this a year ago and thought I would try it again.

In 2011, I gained: professional confidence.

I lost: a friend.

I stopped: feeling guilty for not finishing books.

I started: opening myself up to someone new.

I was hugely satisfied by: by my ability to speak up during a difficult meeting.

And frustrated by: my inability to get out of my own way sometimes.

I am so embarrassed that I: didn't go to the movies by myself.

Once again, I: worked at decluttering.

Once again, I did not: finish decluttering.

The biggest physical difference between me last December and this December is: comfortable shoes.

The biggest psychological difference between me last December and this December is
: connecting better with my sisters.

I loved spending time: with my family on our road trip.

Why did I spend even two minutes: being nervous.

I should have spent more time: being thankful.

I regret buying: my iPad 1st generation, I should have waited and bought the 2nd generation.

I will never regret buying
morning coffee even though with that money I could have spent it on books.

I play Farmville way too much.

I didn’t exercise enough.

Anticipation drove me crazy.

The most relaxing place I went was going for leisurely drives.

Why did I go to extremes?

The best thing I did for someone else was
listen. And care.

The best thing I did for myself
open myself to the possibilities.

The best thing someone did for me
be there when I needed it.

The one thing I’d like to do again, but do it better, join a committee with a focus.

today's wraptastic!

So it's Christmas Eve and I've already been shopping. And I'm done, now it's time to start putting together my famous gift bags. I'm going to be finished my wraptastic day earlier than usual, which will leave me plenty of time for a nap before I go on my annual lights drive around town. Having a full week of school has really dampened my holiday spirits. I hope I can shake off the school blahs and dig into my usual holiday cheer. Actually, I felt merry when I was shopping this morning. W*lM*rt was crowded so I went to the K-M*rtique instead and it was not crowded or overly busy. I bet I'll be my usual jolly self shortly.

It is a white Christmas, we did finally get some snow. It's not overly cold out, either, which adds to my festive mood. Zero degrees isn't too bad.

If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant: if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome.~Anne Bradstreet

In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer.~Albert Camus

finished reading...

From the publisher:
Married for twenty years to Edward Berry, Lyddie is used to the trials of being a whaler's wife in the Cape Cod village of Satucket, Massachusetts—running their house herself during her husband's long absences at sea, living with the daily uncertainty that Edward will simply not return. And when her worst fear is realized, she finds herself doubly cursed. She is overwhelmed by grief, and her property and rights are now legally in the hands of her nearest male relative: her daughter's overbearing husband, whom Lyddie cannot abide. Lyddie decides to challenge both law and custom for control of her destiny, but she soon discovers the price of her bold "war" for personal freedom to be heartbreakingly dear.

Set in my favorite historical time, I felt such a strong bond with this story. Lots of historical detail and authentic characters created a rich atmosphere. There were twists and I wanted to know what was going to happen with Lyddie.

2) I haven't watched all of Elf this year. What is wrong with me?

3) I have the Charlie Brown special from NetFlix. I'll probably watch it tonight.

4) I spent time with my 8th period AP class talking about books we've read. Then we got talking about me being a "plugged in" teacher and they were amazed that I have a blog and that I use Twitter (and Plurk). So they made me send a tweet from class. Wasted time, but it was so much fun.

5) My other classes seem to think we're just supposed to be playing reindeer games. They are not impressed that we're working on an in-class project until Friday.

6) Speaking of Friday, can you believe we have school on Friday--a regular school day?

7) I don't know what to get myself for a gift this year. I didn't get myself a birthday gift or a Thanksgiving gift, either. I could buy myself some books.

only Santa can...

STOCKTON, Calif. -- A California teenager has learned the hard way that he's no Santa Claus.

The Stockton Record reports 18-year-old George Herrera got stuck in a chimney while trying to sneak into his house Thursday.

Art Ray of the Stockton Fire Department says the teen was breaking curfew and trying to get inside his home.

Ray says Herrera was trapped near the chimney bottom for about 90 minutes before emergency crews were called around 10:15 a.m. When they arrived, they could see his feet sticking out of the fireplace.

Rays says rescuers secured ropes around the teenager's wrists and pulled him up about 8 feet with the help of a firetruck ladder.

Officials say Herrera wasn't hurt and was allowed to return home after the rescue, which took about 15 minutes.

nerves...

So, Friday night is a big challenge for me: my (boy)friend's company Christmas party. These people have heard all about me, which makes me nervous. And I know relatively nothing about any of them. I don't even know how many people are going to be there or what the dress code is going to be like. But I decided I'm going dressy-casual (which means something if you live in Northern Maine).

finished reading...

From the editor:
In the small village of Edgecombe St. Mary in the English countryside lives Major Ernest Pettigrew (retired), an unlikely hero. Wry, courtly, opinionated, and completely endearing, the Major leads a quiet life valuing the proper things that Englishmen have lived by for generations: honor, duty, decorum, and a properly brewed cup of tea. But then his brother’s death sparks an unexpected friendship with Mrs. Jasmina Ali, the Pakistani shopkeeper from the village. Drawn together by their shared love of literature and the loss of their spouses, the Major and Mrs. Ali soon find their friendship blossoming into something more. But village society insists on embracing him as the quintessential local and regarding her as the permanent foreigner. Can their relationship survive the risks one takes when pursuing happiness in the face of culture and tradition?

I was charmed by this book. It was amusing that the Major tries to solve all the problems in the book with his upright, proper, old-fashioned manners and behavior. He doesn't seem to realize that times and society have changed. There were a lot of witty moments and some poignant moments. Some moments of almost slap-stick moments and some serious, thoughtful moments.

I'm sure we will have a lot to talk about in reading group. It is a great book for discussion.

ten things tuesday...

Last week I focused on things that annoy me during the holidays. So this week I'm focusing on things that give me great cheer during the holidays.

1) Lights and decorations. It's festive.

2) Holiday food. Especially made in fun and festive shapes. Or things that are just made and served during this time of year.

3) Friendly faces. Seeing people that I don't usually see during the year. Greeting people at the markets. Clerks and cashiers that are friendly.

4) Music. I adore Christmas music. I've been listening to it since Halloween. It's happy, happy music.

5) Buying presents. I love finding just the right thing for just the right person.

6) Getting presents. Let's be honest, who doesn't like getting presents. Fortunately, people in my life aren't overly extravagant so things are practical.

7) Wrapping presents. With my OCD and need for perfection, I go over the top with my package presentations. It's fun. Especially because I play holiday movies while I wrap.

8) Getting together with my family. It's always awesome to get together with them but during the holidays it's extra festive. I especially like the holiday sing-along.

9) Vacation.

10) Smells. I love the scents of the holidays--cookies, trees, cinnamon.

Bonus: 11) Mistletoe.

ready or not?

How close are you to being ready for Christmas?

the gingerbread cookie test

You Are Happy and Optimistic

You're the type who insists on seeing the glass as half full - even if there's barely anything left.

You think that happiness is a choice, and you will always choose to be cheerful and upbeat.

You tend to spread cheer and goodwill during the holidays. You're the first one to offer up a plate of cookies.

She's going through a struggle now and it pains me that there's nothing I can do help her. We were able to celebrate her birthday which made me very happy. She deserves to be celebrated.
